Miss Scarlett Cooks! Hot Ham and Cheese Rolls

Brrrr! I don't know about the rest of you, but it is COLD here! This is when I turn to the part of my recipe book that has meals that are comforting and piping hot. Meals like these really soothe you after a long, cold day. Welcome to the Hobby Haven!

Crank up the heat (or toss on a sweater), and let's get cooking!

The great thing about this recipe is that it's very simple, and doesn't require a lot of ingredients. You already might have most of these on hand! These are also wonderful for parties or potlucks.

The Ingredients:

  • 1 tube refrigerated pizza dough
  • Approximately 3/4 pound of sliced deli ham, enough for 12-ish thin slices**
  • Approximately 1/2 to 3/4 pound of sliced deli cheese, enough for 12-ish slices***
  • 1/2 cup butter****
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar****
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds*****
**Any type/flavor of ham will work; I used honey ham for this recipe
***I suggest using Swiss cheese, but feel free to use your favorite!
****I have made this recipe with the exact proportions of butter/sugar mentioned above, and made a version with half the butter and the sugar. I personally prefer using less butter and sugar, since I want it to taste more savory and less sweet.
*****My mother got this recipe from a coworker, and it calls for poppy seeds. I don't know anybody who likes poppy seeds or keeps them around the house, so feel free to omit if desired.

The Tools:
  • An oven
  • A 9 x 13 glass baking dish
  • Cooking spray
  • A cutting board
  • A rolling pin
  • A sharp knife
  • A small sauce pan
  • A whisk
How to make it:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees; spray the dish with the cooking spray.
  • Unroll the pizza dough onto a clean cutting board, smoothing it down. Place the ham and cheese three pieces across, and four down, overlapping each other.
  • Take one of the long edges of the dough and begin to roll it up, like a cinnamon roll. Make sure to roll it tightly! Once finished, carefully turn the roll over so that the seam is on the bottom.
  • Cut the roll into 12 1-inch pieces, and then place the slices into the baking dish.
  • Put a small sauce pan on a burner turned to medium heat. Combine the butter, sugar, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce together, whisking the mixture until it is melted and has a smooth texture. Take the sauce off the heat and pour over the slices in the baking dish.
  • Bake uncovered for approximately 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
